Himalayan salt was formed from marine fossil deposits within the earth and crystallized over 250 million years ago during the Jurassic era. The ancient sea beds were then covered by lava protecting the salt from modern-day pollution. Himalayan salt is chemically similar to table salt and is up to 98 percent sodium chloride but also contains other trace minerals like chromium, iron, zinc and copper. Himalayan crystal salt is different from table salt as refined table salt has all the trace minerals removed from the salt leaving just sodium chloride. The process of refining and processing table salts also involves the addition of anticaking agents, which make it more difficult for the salt to mix with water. This means that when we ingest table salt, it doesn’t dissolve completely. Iodine is also added (which is why we call it iodized salt) but the iodine here is typically synthetic, which again makes it more difficult for our body to process. Some salt crystals from the Himalayas have an off-white to transparent colour, while some have a pink, reddish, or beet-red colour The different colours from the trace elements (including energy-rich iron) arise from the veins of the salt.
